Bid for Afridi may hurt Chargers

Shahid Afridi is set to be approached by an Australian domestic side to join it for the Champions League T20 tournament in 2010.

In what could end up being an ironical development for theDeccan Chargers, Pakistan's man-of-the-moment, who steered his team to victory in the just-concluded ICC World Twenty20 tournament with superlative performances in the last two matches, is on New South Wales's radar for next season's domestic season.

"He is clearly one of the world's best Twenty20 players, but also he would be a valuable addition to our dressing room, our young

players would learn a lot from him," the ‘Sydney Morning Herald' quoted a Cricket NSW official as saying.

If NSW do sign up Afridi, he could be the man to help them qualify for the lucrative Champions League tournament, and then guide them to the title itself. The NSW side, known officially as the RTA Speedblitz Blues, have already qualified for this October's tournament by virtue of being the domestic champions. Afridi, however, will be ineligible to play for them this year.

The mercurial all-rounder was a part of the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League's first season, which they had finished with the wooden spoon. The franchise later severed all ties with Afridi after his scathing criticism of VVS Laxman's captaincy.

The Deccan Chargers went on to win IPL 2 in a fairy-tale finish and qualified for this year's Champions League, to be held in India.

If the IPL champions make it to next season's Champions League as well, they might be left feeling a trifle sheepish if the Pathan decides to peak against his former teammates. Only time will tell if Boom Boom Afridi will return to haunt the Chargers.
